Somerset, KY trip October 2006 (day 3)

Sigh. The last day of our little vacation. We packed up our stuff, loaded up the Jeep, and checked out. Dolly had given Sarah some family pictures so Sarah could copy them. We went to Walmart so Sarah could copy pictures and I could get some kleenex. I'd developed a cold. The room was very dry and I don't think that helped anything. After Walmart we went to Sonic for breakfast. Next on the agenda was to hit the flea market. Sarah had been looking forward to getting some Christmas shopping done there. Me...I normally hate shopping but I thought I might find something interesting there. We spent an hour or so in the flea market. I have never seen so much JUNK in my life. Neither one of us bought anything. We went by Dolly's to drop off the pictures. She wasn't home so we wrapped the pictures in a plastic bag and left them on the front porch. We pulled out of Somerset and headed up US27. At Danville we hopped on US127 which took us through Harrodsburg. I showed Sarah a few more of the places we'd been on our earlier motorcycle trip. US127 took us all the way to Frankfort. At Frankfort I turned onto US421. Friends at work had said 421 was a nice road to take motorcycles on, and they were right. The first 10-15 miles north of Frankfort was almost all curves. This gave way to hilly straightaways, long curves, and quaint small towns all the way to the Indiana border city of Madison. The Ohio river crossing at Madison, IN is made on an older 2-lane bridge. Madison is a nice riverside town. US421 from Madison to Versailles is B-O-R-I-N-G. Straight. Flat. Maybe a half dozen turns the whole way. Plenty of corn fields where deer can get within 10 feet of the highway before ambushing you. In the future I'd take SR7 from Madison to North Vernon and save about 22 miles...maybe even SR250 straight to Brownstown. Sarah had a hankering for catfish so we stopped at the Cracker Barrel in Seymour. After that we finished the 40-mile drive home. 2 to 3 - great motorcycle road on US421 5 - Home Epilogue The long weekend trip was nice. I finally got to meet Sarah's relatives that I've heard about for a long time. I also have mental information on some good motorcycle routes...US421 south of Indiana, Cumberland Falls. We didn't make it to Burnside Island state park so we have something to do if we go back again. Time to start daydreaming about the next trip. Maybe a ride down 421 to the North Carolina coast...
